Slip ratings explained
Understanding Slip Ratings
Slip resistance is one of the most important — and most overlooked — considerations outdoors, especially around pools and wet areas. Here is what the ratings actually mean for your space.
P3
Low slip risk
Suitable for covered outdoor areas and low-exposure surfaces. Not recommended for wet zones.
P4
Moderate slip risk
A good general-purpose outdoor rating for patios, alfresco and entry areas exposed to weather.
P5
High slip resistance
Recommended for pool surrounds, wet areas and surfaces exposed to water. The safest standard rating.
R
Ramp ratings (R10–R13)
Used for sloped or ramped surfaces; R11+ is typical for outdoor ramps and pool entries.

Falls
Surfaces are laid to a calculated fall so water runs off, not pools. The right fall depends on the area and finish.
Water runoff
We plan where water goes — to drains, gardens or stormwater — so it never sits against or under the tile.
Expansion joints
Outdoor surfaces move with temperature. Correctly placed expansion joints absorb that movement and prevent cracking.

Outdoor surfaces are low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. A simple routine keeps them looking exceptional year after year.
Cleaning
Sweep regularly and wash with pH-neutral, outdoor-safe cleaners to remove dirt and salt residue.
Sealing
Natural stone and some porcelains benefit from sealing. We advise on the right sealer and schedule.
Pressure washing
Periodic gentle pressure washing lifts grime from textured outdoor surfaces — avoid excessive pressure near grout.
Grout maintenance
Check grout joints seasonally; re-seal or repair any cracked or degraded joints promptly.
Natural stone care
Stone needs resealing and pH-neutral cleaning — never acidic products that can etch the surface.

Frequently asked questions.
Travertine, limestone and lighter porcelain stay coolest underfoot. Darker stones and dense surfaces retain more heat. For pool surrounds and barefoot areas we recommend cool, slip-rated options and can advise on the best choice for your aspect.

Pool surrounds should use P5 (or R12+) rated surfaces where barefoot use and constant water are expected. P4 is generally sufficient for covered alfresco and patios. We specify the correct rating for each zone so the surface is safe as well as beautiful.
